CLOUS / L'ARBRE AUX CLOUS - 2015 / 2011
Description:

CLOUS
(first version performed in 2011)
By/with Yann Marussich. With Arturo Corrales (composer). 60 minutes.
At the centre of the room we see a large seat-like structure made up of several hundred vertical spikes on which the performer is stretched out impassively. The viewer wonders how this body, bearing down with all its weight on the “armchair of nails”, can bear the pain. Is he asleep or unconscious? A sculptural totem for a pagan ritual, Clous is an allegory of the psychological density of passing time.

L'ARBRE AUX CLOUS (2011)
A man wearing only black briefs hangs 8 metres off the floor by his arms and legs. He is facing upwards. There is a sense of danger. It would only take the man to let go of one of the ropes to fall. Below, a woman sings under a dead tree with nails protruding from its trunk. A percussionist backs the singer with organ-type music that fills the air with melancholy. In the middle of the room, we can see an imposing steel structure made of several hundred vertical spikes, ready to receive the still body.

It takes 15 minutes for the man, a captive prey, to slowly drop down into this steel armchair. After a few minutes, the performer is once again inert. Has he fallen asleep? The audience cannot perceive the pain. Instead they feel a contradictory sense of relief with this body at rest on a bed of nails. They’re suspended amidst conflicting feelings of peace of mind and feelings for the man. Whether a pagan ritual or a sculptural totem that might absorb the pain, with this performance, Yann Marussich revisits the symbol of the Tree of Life in line with humanity itself. The concert continues, playing key visual and auditory roles while the passive and focused performer bears the pain of his weight pressed against this fakir armchair, questioning the passing of time.
